Arrest after assault at university

A man is in a London hospital with a serious head injury after an assault at the University of Kent at Canterbury overnight.

Police were called to reports of a disturbance at 1.30am today (Thursday 28 May 2009) following a fire alarm at the Venue club where more than 800 people were evacuated outside as a precaution. Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the fire point had been smashed deliberately.

A 20-year-old man from Canterbury is at St George's Hospital in Tooting where he is in a stable condition. He will be assessed by neurologists again in the morning. He was unconscious on the ground when paramedics arrived, but regained consciousness in the ambulance. Results of scans at the William Harvey Hospital at Ashford meant he was transferred to specialists in London for treatment.

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm - two 20-year-old men from Canterbury and an 18-year-old from Portsmouth. They remain in custody at Canterbury Police Station this afternoon.
